Khazad-dûm was the greatest of the Dwarf Kingdoms of old. A vast labyrinth of halls and passages cut deep into the Misty Mountains, it contained the city of Dwarrowdelf, home of the Longbeards: Durin's folk. For thousands of years Khazad-dûm remained the seat of Dwarven power in Middle-earth, and for as long as Dwarves occupied its chambers work continued ceaselessly. Following rich veins of Mithril silver, that most valued of metals, the Dwarves tunnelled ever deeper. In times of wealth and peace the western entrance to Khazad-dûm stood open. Commerce thrived between Durin's people and the neighbouring Elves. The doors themselves were a symbol of friendship between the two, wrought as they were by both Dwarven and Elven hands. Mithril mined within was spun with magic into ithildin letters and iconography that shone only in the light of the moon or stars. Upon their sheer surfaces were inlaid the initials of their makers, the king, and the riddling inscription 'Speak friend and enter'. While the Dwarves enjoyed many long years of tranquil prosperity, the day finally came when war and death invaded Khazad-dûm and the Doors of Durin were sealed. By the waning years of the Third Age of Middle-earth, no Dwarf dared cross the threshold into the once proud empire of their people. Moria it was called, the Black Pit, home to Orcs and things far worse. So, it was when the Fellowship came to the Cliffs of Celebdil that they found the Doors closed and surrounded by decay. Even the once beautiful holly trees flanking the entranceway were deathly and pale, their roots drowned by a sickly black pool gathered before the gate. Its skin was nigh impervious to weapons forged of iron, a testament to the unforgiving nature of the dark places of the world where it dwelt. Clutched within its colossal three-fingered grasp was a mighty stone hammer, a fearsome instrument of destruction that it wielded with blind fury. With each thunderous swing, friend and foe alike were laid low, crushed beneath the indiscriminate wrath of the beast as it stormed through the chaotic melee, seeking out its quarry with a relentless fervour that echoed the darkness of its masters' hearts.The Cave Troll was the first creature to be designed for the iconic film trilogy, and Weta Workshop sculptor Jamie Beswarick played a key role in its overall design. In those early days, the look and feel of Middle-earth's inhabitants were still being defined, with artists encouraged to envision not only their appearances but also their habits and histories. This approach aimed to develop a level of authenticity that went beyond the typical fantasy genre.Consequently, these lumbering giants were endowed with thick hides, three-fingered hands, powerful jaws, and claws suited for digging. It was these defining characteristics that Jamie Beswarick was once again tasked with recreating, this time in miniature form. By capturing the raw strength and ferocity of such a creature, and infusing each detail with untamed wrath and fury, our incredible team has managed to capture the very essence of this behemoth. Bred in secret by the fallen Wizard Saruman, the Uruk-hai issued forth from the pits of Isengard under the command of the towering, lynx-eyed Lurtz. Driving his troops to run under a burning sun, Lurtz hunted ceaselessly along the banks of the Anduin for the Fellowship of the Ring. Among the first of his kind to be pulled from the earth, Lurtz was tall, even for an Uruk. No sooner had he emerged than Saruman bent him to his will, setting the Uruk-hai on their snivelling Orc overseers in a test of loyalty and strength. Without thought or regret the Uruks slew their lesser cousins, binding themselves to the Wizard by marking their flesh and shields with his sigil, the emblem of the white hand. Find the Halflings!' Of all the terrors to confront the Fellowship of the Ring on their journey, none would compare with the Balrog. A demon of flame and shadow, the creature had lain entombed for countless ages in the deepest darkness, far beneath the Misty Mountains.Deep within the earth, tunnelling for Mithril in sunless black rock, the Dwarves disturbed something that had remained safely entombed since ages past, a being of unfathomable terror, relic of a time of gods and giants, a creature of which the like should never walk again in Middle-earth and for whom there were few equals remaining in the world, a Balrog of Morgoth. The Balrog could be harmed by no blade or device of Dwarf design. By the hundreds, Durin's people and the Dwarf King himself fell before the beast, after named Durin's Bane. When the Fellowship of the Ring sought to pass beneath the Misty Mountains and thereby thwart the attentions of the fallen Wizard Saruman, it was against Gandalf's grave misgivings, for the Grey Wizard suspected what haunted in the shadows of Moria. Secrecy alone might secure their safe passage, for if the Balrog were alerted, Gandalf knew their escape would only be bought at great price, and he would not again pass through the Dwarf realm's doors. Gimli, son of Glóin, was one of the nine members of the fellowship of the Ring, and the only dwarf among its ranks.During the War of the Ring, Gimli formed part of an unlikely trio of warriors, alongside Legolas the Elf and Aragorn of the Dúnedain. Their skills being surprisingly complementary, they fought alongside each other and overcame many insurmountable odds along their travels.Gimli accomplished many feats throughout his life, playing an instrumental role in the battle of Helms Deep, the battle at Pelennor Fields and the battle at the Black Gate. As a gift he was granted three strands of hair from the Lady Galadriel, earning himself the name 'Lockbearer'. Once the head of the Order of the Istari and a truly great and wise Wizard, Saruman the White fell into darkness and became an agent of evil during the War of the Ring. Too long he studied the ways of his enemy, believing that in better understanding Sauron's nature he might discern a means of victory. Using one of the lost Seeing Stones of Númenor, the Wizard sought to spy upon the Dark Lord, but was tricked into communing with him through the polished black orb. It was a contest of wills that Saruman lost.Lured by promises of power and dark thoughts of his own mastery, Saruman fell from his purpose and abandoned his allies. In his arrogance he believed himself capable of usurping Sauron's place. Even as he did his new master's bidding, the corrupted Wizard plotted a second betrayal. Yet in doing so he overreached, for pride and lust for power had blinded Saruman and the Eye of Sauron perceived his treachery through the lens of the palantir. The process of making a film is oft an ever-changing journey. One such changed aspect was the helm worn by the Witch-king during The Return of the King. Whilst this first design was manufactured, and even had scenes shot, it was ultimately decided that its likeness to Sauron's own helm might be perplexing for the audience. Therefore, it was replaced with the Morgul Lord War Mask seen in the final cut of the film.Greatest of the Nazgûl was their leader, the Witch-king of Angmar. Once a mortal man lured by the promise of power, the former King of Men fell under the sway of Sauron until he was little more than an extension of the Dark Lord's presence, his own identity long forgotten. A formless wraith, fear was his greatest weapon, and it was said that by the hand of no man would he fall. For centuries he served his dark master, leading the campaign that saw Arnor destroyed in the north and bringing war to Gondor in the south.
